Forgotten how to love | Poetry

I had stopped believing in fairy tales and magical endings,
I stopped reading and falling in love with things I could never have
I became one with the darkness, I embraced it willingly
My heart wasn’t broken, it was gone.
Stolen by a past lover, I never bothered putting up posters

I never tried to locate it.
I couldn’t bring myself to care enough about love and happiness and moments coated in stardust
Why should I? It clearly was not meant for me
I’ve been this shell of a person for years
I didn’t mind, really, it was comfortable and became my version of normal
Until you came along

You, with your brown eyes and mischievous smile and a voice smooth like velvet
You, with your shattered, beaten heart still loving unconditionally
You, with your ability to see right through my calculated facade
I’ve been telling myself this isn’t love,
It can’t be
I’m not capable of that anymore, I don’t know where to even begin

But… I must admit, when you said you saw me in a dream
My chest felt… strange
And when you slept in my bed, forehead pressed gently against mine
For once, I wasn’t scared to drift asleep
I don’t know what love is,
But maybe, just maybe,

This is it.
